British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels leading to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as ISIS - enforced militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of numerous UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, shows how British military are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military carried out what it described as a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
